After you hear my story, you can decide for yourself.
During a trip to the land of the Pharaohs (Egypt) recently, we stayed at a fabulous hotel within walking distance of the Pyramid of Giza. Shortly after our arrival (since we couldn’t wait) our guide led a group of us on a walk to the Pyramid. As we made our way up the steps of the Pyramid, one of our group (Joan from Houston) slipped, fell and broke her ankle. Our tour guide quickly called for emergency transportation and took her to a Cairo Hospital where her leg was put in a cast. When she was ready to leave, the hospital staff asked her how the bill would be paid and she pulled out her insurance card from the U.S. She soon learned that was not the case and had to have her husband wire the money to cover the very expensive procedure. Thanks to a wheelchair and two guides supporting her, Joan was able to enjoy most aspects of our tour. She was a real trouper! She has totally healed from her experience and still travels extensively but she now always has travel insurance. She has shared that she makes certain it covers in country accidents in addition to the usual travel cancellation and/or delay coverage.
You need to weigh the risks and rewards for travel insurance on local trips but for travel overseas we suggest you seriously consider travel insurance. You never know what might happen and as Murphy says “if it can go wrong, it usually will”.
